Bethlehem Area School District runs four middle schools for grades 6 through 8: Nitschmann, East Hills, Fountain Hill, and Broughal. Each serves a distinct part of the district, and all of them feed into Liberty or Freedom for high school. Sixth grade is a genuine step up from fifth. The coursework is harder, the schedule is more complex, and students are expected to manage more on their own. Some thrive in that transition. Others need a different structure. PA Virtual Charter School is a tuition-free public cyber charter school open to any Pennsylvania resident, serving grades K-12 statewide since 2001.

Middle school is where academic habits take shape. What a student learns to do during grades 6-8 tends to follow them into high school.

Academic Expectations in Middle School

The jump from elementary to middle school is not gradual. Students move from one teacher managing most of their subjects to rotating between several, each with different expectations and deadlines. Middle schoolers are old enough to handle real independence, and the program expects it.
